Market in brief

O2 is a leading player in the Swedish wind-power market and thus dependent on market conditions, energy-political means of control and rules and regulations that apply in Sweden, the Nordic region and Europe. In the past ten years, demand for renewable electricity production capacity in Europe has increased significantly and today, renewable power sources represent nearly half of all the new electricity production capacity in Europe. Wind power is clearly dominating, with approximately 70 per cent of the total capacity increase in renewable sources and this trend is expected to continue.

Wind power also has a central place in energy policies in Sweden. In 2010, a large number of wind turbines were commissioned and annual production rose 40 per cent to approximately 3.5 TWh.

The Swedish Energy Agency and Svensk Vindenergi believe that by 2020 it will be possible to produce between 12.5 and 15 TWh of wind power annually within the framework of the Swedish rules and regulations for renewable electricity production; the Electricity Certificate System.

There are advanced plans to integrate Norway into the Swedish certificate system. In the EU’s renewability directives,
there is scope for several different types of intergovernmental cooperation. Sweden, which has excellent wind conditions, large unpopulated land areas, well-developed infrastructure and a favourable political climate, is deemed to have excellent opportunities for becoming a net exporter of renewable electricity. Combined, these factors contributeto increasing the potential for Swedish wind power and for O2’s possibilities to develop in the future.
